Class Description

In this introductory course in clay, you will start your journey in clay first by getting to know clay as a material. We will work through learning the basics of wheel throwing, exploring different ways to work with clay on and off the wheel and seeing how clay goes from soft and malleable to hardened and useful. Creating vessels for eating, drinking and serving food will be the main objective, but this class will be open to getting to know how each student interprets clay and what happens when we let creativity flow.

Materials List

Clothes you don't mind getting dirty, an apron if you prefer (aprons are also available in the studio), old plastic bags to cover your projects, a basic wheel throwing kit if you have one. Tools are available for use in the studio.

Minimum Age

18 and older, exceptions with special permission

About the Instructor

I came to Floyd to apprentice with Silvie Granatelli after learning how to throw pots at the University of Delaware and transferring to graduate from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. In between school and apprenticing I completed a year long residency at the Cub Creek Foundation in Appomattox, VA. I am so grateful that these experiences have led me to Floyd, where I have started my home studio and continue to build my life as an artist. In the beginning of 2019 I took over the ownership of Troika Crafts, a contemporary fine craft gallery in the heart of Downtown Floyd. Along with the gallery, I have been cemented further into the Floyd craft community when I became a new member of 16 Hands in 2022. Being surrounded by handmade craft every day is one of the best choices I've ever made for my life and I am determined to share this love with my community.

Class Registration and Cancellation Policy

Advance Registration Required.

Registration: Class registrations are confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Cancellation/Refund: The Floyd Center for the Arts will conduct classes for which an adequate number of students are registered. Class status is determined 1 week before the first date of the class, unless otherwise noted. Acceptance of payment does not guarantee that a class will run. If the Center must cancel a scheduled class, students who registered for such classes will be given the opportunity to transfer their payments to another course or receive a full refund of their tuition payment.

Student Withdrawals: Students withdrawing from a class before the cancellation period has ended, (one week prior to the start of class, unless otherwise noted) can receive a full refund or may transfer their payments to another class of their choice. Students who withdraw after the cancellation period has closed or after class has started, will not receive a refund.
