We are very excited to announce a new piece of equipment for our Ceramics Workshop! Please let me introduce you to our new clay extruder, which, along with additional support for our open studios program and our general educational workshops, has been provided by generous grant awards from Blue Cow Arts Foundation and The Community Foundation of the New River Valley.
This new piece of equipment is a system that forces clay through an opening of the user’s choice, into a shape or size that is uniform and consistent. Several attachments are included, allowing the clay to be processed into a wide variety of widths and dimensions. A piece of equipment like this is especially useful for hand-building ceramics and sculptures in clay.
An example of hand-building is the piece below, a work in progress by Kathleen Dawes.
Come to our OPEN STUDIO for January, 2015 on Wednesday, Jan. 21 from 1 – 6PM, and learn all about extruding clay and why you might want to do this as you hand-make the clay into a shape that expresses your artistry or need.
Adults* are welcome no matter what your ability level — only a $5/person materials fee is required. Join us next Wednesday!
*Open Studio Children’s Policy: for the safety and comfort of all users, no children 4 or younger; children 5-12 may use the space and equipment only with a supervising adult (one adult per child); young adults (13-17) are welcome without a parent, however a Minor Waiver must be filled out and signed by a parent and filed with The Jax.
