Class Description: Think of painting as an expressive and emotional act. Some strokes can be brash as an abstract expressionist, while others might meander like gentle flowing water. Joseph’s focus is on the structure, design and light found in nature. Starting with darker colors, he shows you how to build up layers of colors, manipulating them with spontaneous rapid brush strokes, using the brush to draw and form the basic shapes of the composition. Paintings can be very detailed or very loose. Joseph likes to think of the brush as a conductor’s baton or a fencer’s saber connecting you with the object of your attention. Starting with darks, he builds up layers of colors, finishing with the lightest tones. The process starts fast and furious, and ends slowly and thoughtfully.

In this workshop you will learn to organize and edit outdoor views to achieve the best composition, shapes, values, colors, light and pizazz in your paintings. You will learn some simple ways to improve your skill and confidence by making simple step by step studies with a very limited palette. Joseph will do a quick demo each day using acrylic, but all painting media are welcome. The first day will be indoors, with subsequent sessions outdoors on the Art Center grounds.

Joseph’s passion for painting and his boundless encouragement will help you on your path to becoming a more confident artist. Students will need a small portable easel with a limited palette. Some painting experience is helpful but not necessary. Feel free to contact Joseph with any questions (941–924–9889).

About the Instructor: Joseph’s acrylic, watercolor and oil paintings have won many awards including the CFS Medal in the American Watercolor Society and the Georgia Award and Purchase Prize in the National Watercolor Society. Several books and magazines have featured his paintings and he is included in private collections across the US. His youth was spent drawing, painting and building things and exploring the swamps and bayous of his native Louisiana. He has a BA degree in Fine Arts from Louisiana State University and an MFA in painting and drawing from Texas Woman’s University where he was awarded membership in Phi Kappa Phi for academic excellence and now has a scholarship named in his honor. Upon graduating from LSU he worked as curator of exhibits in two science and history museums designing and producing educational exhibitions. He then spent 9 years as a designer of exhibits and sets with a private company until he opened his own business in 1977. For the next 21 years Joseph used all his skills in design, painting, sculpture and mechanics to produce special effects, sets, 3D illustration and model-building for TV, film, industry and advertising. After a long successful career in design, in 1998 Joseph went back to school to earn a Masters of Fine Arts, something he’d always wanted to do. Since receiving his MFA in 2000, his focus has been on painting and teaching art. Joseph has taught at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, TX, Eastfield College in Dallas, TX, State College of FL in Bradenton, FL, as well as private tutoring and regional Art Center classes in Florida. He enjoys painting indoors and plein air, and teaching what he has spent a lifetime learning. Joseph’s secret is that he loves teaching as much as he loves painting and creating things. He currently represented by State of the Arts Gallery in Sarasota, FL.
