Class Description: This blacksmithing workshop is all about re-purposed, recycled objects for your garden or home. Students will review the equipment, tools and safety precautions involved in the use of the blacksmith’s forge. The class will practice fundamental blacksmithing techniques while getting creative with more than just steel rod. If you have old tools or junk lying around bring it. Students are asked to bring their own safety glasses and to wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Aprons and gloves are optional. Forge and fabricate and form critters from mild steel. Whether it walks, flies, swims or slithers, you can create it in realistic or expressive style. This is a fun and challenging class for all levels. If you are enthusiastic, comfortable working with your hands, and willing to work hard, you qualify.
Minimum Age: 18 and older or with special permission by instructor

About the Instructor: Bryan Fritts has been blacksmithing since 1997, and is Manley Brown's ( blacksmith in Lexington VA ) last living apprentice. He has worked in the blacksmith shop as an historic interpreter at Virginia Explore Park and does public demonstration's at fall festivals across southern VA. Bryan is both self taught and has taken classes at John C Campbell Folk School. He has also attended numerous blacksmithing workshops sponsored by the guilds located in the area. He is a member of ABANA and the Old Dominion Blacksmith's Association. Bryan states "I love working with iron and non-ferrous metals. I also do fabrication and welding and upcycled / repurposed art from junk. I live in Blue Ridge VA with my wife Becky and have four children and four grandchildren."
